KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's rise in World Football Federation (FIFA) ranking from 155 to 148 at end 2011 is good news for the national football team.

The ranking put Malaysia on par with Singapore (145), Turkmenistan (146), Lesotho (147), Samoa (149), Equatorial Guinea (150) and others lacking basic infrastructure such as fields, stadiums and equipment.

However, the seven rung jump is still far from the country's best ranking of 75 in 1993 and last year, Malaysia's best ranking was at 138.

Malaysia's (Harimau Malaya) trail of glory began with the gold medal win at Laos SEA Games 2009 by defeating defending champion Vietnam 1-0.

Represented by the Under 23 squad (Harimau Muda), Malaysia defended the  gold medal at Jakarta SEA Games beating Indonesia in a tense final.

Malaysian won 4-3 on penalty kicks after the match ended 1-1 after extratime.

Several months earlier, the senior squad coached by Datuk K. Rajagopal won AFF Suzuki Cup 4-2 on aggregate, the first time after 14 years, also beating  Indonesia.

Victory was all the more sweeter as it was made in front thousands of fanatical Indonesian football fans at Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

Malaysian players had to be escorted by Indonesian security forces and entered and left the stadium in an armoured behicle called 'Barracuda', a scene replicated at Jakarta SEA Games final.

On their return from Indonesia, the squad played two 2012 Olympic qualifying matches at home to Syria and Bahrain and lost 0-2 and 2-3.     Olympic squad coach Ong Kim Swee blamed fatigue from the SEA Games final and loss of focus as reasons for the two defeats.

What is heartening is the unwavering support of diehard Malaysian football fans called 'Ultras Malaya' who filled up the national stadium at both matches.

Sale of 30,000 tickets for the first and 45,000 for the second match proves that support for Harimau Malaya from football fans is on the rise.

The string of success saw the senior squad and Harimau Muda receiving invitation for friendly matches from several clubs and countries like India, Australia and Saudi Arabia.

Hopefully, the recent successes will strengthen determination of the Malaysian squad to defend AFF Suzuki Cup at home in 2012. — Bernama
