Aidil vows never to repeat blunder - Underground Voice

AN apologetic Aidil Zafuan Radzak vowed not to repeat the error which gifted Hong Kong with a late equaliser to hold Malaysia 1-1 in a friendly in Shah Alam on Wednesday.

In all fairness to Aidil, none of the centre-back's teammates warned him that Hong Kong's Lam Hok Wei was lurking just behind him when the newly-signed Johor FC defender rolled the ball back to goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.

Unfortunately for Aidil, 25, the ball rolled too slowly and Hok Wei nipped in to round Fahmi and stroke it into the unguarded net.

As Aidil slumped to the ground with his head in his hands, Fahmi was going berserk in front of a stunned 5,000-odd crowd looking on at a celebrating Hong Kong team.

"It was my mistake. I know I let the team down. I can only hope that in a real match, I will not make the same mistake again," said Aidil, one of the most experienced players in the national team with 43 international appearances since 2007.

"We had a chance to win and with Safee scoring again, I hope more goals will come. We've to be positive in anything we do so I will use this as a learning experience and continue to give my 100 per cent without thinking about the pressure."

National coach K. Rajagobal down played Aidil's mistake and said it could have happened to anyone.

"Hong Kong were pushing for an equaliser and it was a mistake by Aidil, probably due to miscommunication with the goalkeeper, which gave them their goal," said Rajagobal.

"You can't do it in games at this level but this mistake could have happened anywhere. Even experienced players have done this before. He just has to pay more attention and has confidence under pressure.

"But it is good it happened in this game and not during the tournament.

"We have one more game and we have to be more serious against Bangladesh (on Tuesday)."

The error aside, Aidil was a steadying influence in defence though his partnership with Fadhli Shas still needs work after the two defenders both went to tackle the same player in the first half with the ball rolling loose to an unmarked Cheung Siu Wai whose shot was stopped by Khairul Fahmi.

Aidil missed the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup through injury and will be keen to be more involved this time when Malaysia open their campaign against Singapore on Nov 25.
